The change in technology and autonomous competitive threat is forcing every corporate to reinvent themselves to face change in customer demand and to meet technological changes. Electric and self-driving Autonomous ideas are considered as next generation technology and almost all automobile companies are competing each other to become pioneers in the technology and innovation. BMW self Driving car is next generation car which will make life even simpler.
GM recently spent $1 billion to acquire Cruise Automation, a Silicon Valley start-up that makes self-driving car software. In 2015, Toyota Motors spent almost $1 billion on artificial intelligence, including efforts to make fully self-driving vehicles.
Tesla is currently in News for its Autopilot system that claims to be the most advanced system on the market in recent days, many other automakers are also planning to release Level 4 autonomous self-driving cars in the next 5 years.
Levels of Autonomy.
Level 0: Level 0 Autonomous system is basic level where Driver controls steering, brake, speed of car, which is commonly seen in most of the cars.
Level 1: In Level 2 Autonomous system Driver controls most of the functions, but a specific function (like steering or accelerating) can be automated.
Level 2: In level 2 Autonomous system, at least one driver assistance system either steering or acceleration/ deceleration is automated. The driver is disengaged from physically operating the vehicle by having his or her hands off the steering wheel and foot off pedal at the same time.
Level 3: In level 3 Autonomous system, Drivers are required but only during “safety-critical functions” like under certain traffic or environmental conditions, Driver will be present but will intervene only if necessary, if it is not required he/she will just monitor the situation.
Level 4: Level 4 Autonomous system is fully automated system which can alone manage all the functions without human intervention, the system is designed to perform all safety-critical driving functions and monitor roadway conditions for an entire trip one drawback of the system is this is limited to the operational design domain (ODD) of the vehicle.
Level 5: Level 4 Autonomous system is fully automated system and fully-autonomous system that expects the vehicle’s performance to equal that of a human driver, in every driving scenario including extreme environments like dirt roads that are unlikely to be navigated by driverless vehicles in the near future.
BMW Self Driving Car – Level 5 Autonomous
BMW which was considered as laggards in Autonomous system, Elmar Frickenstein, BMW’s Senior Vice President for Autonomous Driving has announced that they are launching BMW iNEXT model model with Level 3,4, and 5 automation by 2021.
BMW announced its decision after Tesla’s incident where Tesla’s Automated car swirled around an accident that killed a Tesla driver who was using the car’s autopilot software.
BMW Self Driving Car- 2021
The strategic idea of BMW is by 2021, it will have different levels of autonomy for different situations and different customers for this project BMW has entered a partnership with Intel (INTC, Tech30) and the Israeli computer vision company Mobileye (MBLY) two tech companies that are highly in advanced in the developing extreme processing power and image recognition software, respectively with their help BMW is planning to change car market through advanced technology by 2021.
BMW’s announcement will paves the way for cars with no steering wheel and pedals, which would, unfortunately, transform the Ultimate Driving Machine into an Ultimate Passenger Machine. And if you are born today, you will never need a driver’s licence, if we are to believe specialists.
