WhatsApp bring back text status

The recent WhatsApp ‘Status’ update, where WhatsApp replaced text-based status by a clone of Snapchat Stories, where the feature let users share photos, GIFS and videos overlaid with colourful drawings and emojis, and they would disappear after 24 hours.

The About Status feature in whatsapp used to allow users to set a text Status that other people can view either opening a contact entry or starting a chat thread. This feature was removed when Facebook announced that it would be adding its “stories” feature to the app.

The feature was first introduced with Instagram Stories and then brought to Facebook Messenger and main Facebook app, Instagram Stories became successful with over 150 million users but Facebook seems to have failed to replicate the success on other platforms.

The move received backlash from users who showed their apathy through app store reviews, the high rated whatsapp also received one and two-star reviews due to the update.  In an attempt to placate its users, the Facebook-owned company announced that it will be bringing back the text-based status feature,

  New Update

In a statement to TechCrunch,

“We heard from our users that people missed the ability to set a persistent text-only update in their profile, so we’ve integrated this feature into the ‘About’ section in profile settings. Now, the update will appear next to profile names anytime you view contacts, such as when creating a new chat or looking at Group info. At the same time, we’re continuing to build on the new Status feature that gives people fun and engaging ways to share photos, videos and GIFs with their friends and family throughout their day”
